It’s an easy win for both taste and convenience.

Essential Ingredients for Your Mini Pizzas
Crafting the perfect English Muffin Pizza starts with selecting quality ingredients. Here’s a closer look at what you’ll need and some tips for choosing the best options:
- English Muffins: The star of our show! You have plenty of choices here. Standard plain English muffins are always a great option, but feel free to explore. Whole wheat English muffins add a nutritious boost and a slightly nuttier flavor. Sourdough English muffins offer a wonderful tanginess that complements pizza toppings beautifully. Even homemade English muffins, if you have the time and inclination, would be superb. The key is their sturdy yet chewy texture, which holds up perfectly to the sauce and cheese.
- Pizza Sauce: The flavor foundation of your pizza. Whether you opt for a smooth or chunky texture, a store-bought marinara, or a homemade concoction, choose a sauce you genuinely enjoy. A good quality pizza sauce will elevate your mini pizzas significantly. We personally find that a rich, robust sauce, like our pizza sauce with tomato paste recipe, delivers incredible depth of flavor. Look for varieties with balanced seasoning and a hint of sweetness.
- Olive Oil: A drizzle of olive oil before toasting helps crisp up the muffin halves and adds a subtle richness. Extra virgin olive oil is preferred for its flavor.
- Shredded Mozzarella Cheese: For that classic melty, stretchy pizza experience, shredded mozzarella is essential. Low-moisture, part-skim mozzarella melts beautifully without making the pizza watery. While mozzarella is traditional, don’t hesitate to experiment! A blend of mozzarella and provolone, or a sprinkle of Parmesan, can add extra layers of flavor.
- Your Favorite Pizza Toppings: This is where the customization truly shines!
- Meats: Mini pepperonis, cooked crumbled sausage, diced ham, cooked bacon bits, shredded cooked chicken.
- Vegetables: Sliced mushrooms, bell peppers (any color), onions (red or white), black olives, spinach (sautéed or fresh, added after baking), cherry tomatoes (halved).
- Herbs & Seasonings: Italian seasoning (a must!), garlic powder, red pepper flakes for a kick, fresh basil (added after baking for vibrant flavor).

Easy Step-By-Step Instructions for Perfect English Muffin Pizzas
Making these mini pizzas is incredibly straightforward. Follow these simple steps for a guaranteed delicious result:
- Prepare Your Oven and Muffins: First, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). This ensures your pizzas bake evenly and quickly. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup and to prevent sticking. Carefully slice your English muffins in half horizontally, exposing their textured inner surfaces. Place the English muffin halves, cut side facing up, on the prepared baking sheet.
- Pre-Toast for Crispiness: Drizzle about ½ to 1 teaspoon of olive oil over the top of each English muffin half. This crucial step helps create a barrier against sogginess and enhances the crisp texture. Roast them in the preheated oven for 5 minutes, or until they are lightly golden and slightly crisp around the edges. This pre-baking step is key to a non-soggy pizza. Remove them from the oven.

- Layer on Your Toppings: Now for the fun part! Spoon about 2 tablespoons of your favorite pizza sauce over each toasted English muffin half. Use the back of the spoon to gently spread the sauce evenly to the edges. Next, sprinkle a generous layer of shredded mozzarella cheese over the sauce. Finally, add any other desired pizza toppings and a pinch of Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper to taste. Don’t overload them, as too many toppings can make the base soggy.

- Final Bake: Return the baking sheet with your topped English muffin pizzas to the oven. Bake for another 8-10 minutes, or until the cheese is beautifully melted and bubbly, and the edges of the muffins are golden brown and crisp. Keep an eye on them to prevent over-browning.
- Serve Immediately: Once baked to perfection, remove the pizzas from the oven. If desired, garnish with fresh basil leaves for a burst of color and herbaceous flavor. Serve these delightful English Muffin Pizzas immediately while they are hot and the cheese is gloriously gooey.

Pro Tips for the Best English Muffin Pizzas
Achieving the perfect crispy, non-soggy English Muffin Pizza is simple with these expert tips:
- Preventing Soggy Pizzas is Key: The most common concern with English Muffin Pizzas is a soggy base. Our pre-baking step is your primary defense! By toasting the English muffins for 5 minutes before adding toppings, you create a slightly crisped surface that resists soaking up excess sauce. This ensures your base remains wonderfully firm and chewy.
- The Pepperoni Layer Trick: For an extra layer of sogginess protection, especially if you prefer larger pepperonis or have a very moist sauce, try this trick: place a layer of larger-sized pepperonis directly onto the toasted English muffin halves first. Then, spoon your pizza sauce over the pepperonis, followed by cheese and other toppings. This acts as an additional barrier, keeping the bread from getting wet. This technique works wonders for recipes like French Bread Pizza too!
- Don’t Overload: While it’s tempting to pile on all your favorite toppings, moderation is key. Too many toppings, especially wet ones, can weigh down the muffin and contribute to sogginess. Stick to a balanced amount for the best texture and flavor.
- Cheese Matters: Use good quality shredded mozzarella for the best melt. Avoid fresh mozzarella for these pizzas, as it contains too much moisture and can make the pizzas watery.
- Broiler for Extra Crispness: If you like a super crispy crust and slightly browned, bubbly cheese, you can carefully finish your pizzas under the broiler for the last minute or two. Keep a very close eye on them, as they can burn quickly!
Storing and Reheating Your Mini Pizzas
These English Muffin Pizzas are fantastic fresh, but they also store and reheat well, making them excellent for meal prep!
- Refrigerate: To store leftover English Muffin Pizzas, arrange them topping-side up in an airtight container. They will keep fresh in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
- Reheating from Refrigerator: For best results, reheat in the oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 10 minutes, or until thoroughly heated through and the cheese is re-melted and bubbly. You can also quickly warm them in the microwave on high for about 1 minute, but the crust will be softer.
- Freeze: To freeze for later, first bake the pizzas as directed and let them cool completely. Once cool, place the English muffins (topping side up) on a baking sheet and flash freeze for 1-2 hours until solid. This prevents them from sticking together. Once frozen, transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or airtight container. They can be stored in the freezer for up to 2-3 months.
- Reheating from Frozen: To reheat frozen English Muffin Pizzas, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the frozen pizzas directly on a baking sheet (no need to thaw) and bake for approximately 15 minutes, or until heated through and the cheese is melted and bubbly. Microwaving from frozen is also an option for convenience, but will result in a softer texture.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About English Muffin Pizzas

Yes, you can make English muffin pizzas in the microwave for an even quicker meal, though the texture will be softer and less crisp compared to oven-baked. To improve the crispiness, you can first toast the English muffin halves in a toaster. Then, add your sauce and cheese as directed, and microwave for 30 seconds to 1 minute, or until the cheese is melted. This is a great option when you’re really short on time.
Yes, English Muffin Pizzas are perfectly suited for a toaster oven! Follow the same temperature and timing guidelines. The smaller oven size might even lead to faster cooking, so keep a close eye on them to prevent burning.
For a healthier twist, load up your pizzas with fresh vegetables like bell peppers, mushrooms, spinach, onions, and olives. You can also opt for lean protein sources like grilled chicken or turkey pepperoni. Using whole wheat English muffins and a low-sugar marinara sauce further enhances the nutritional value.

Notes
To prevent soggy English muffins: Toasting the English muffins helps crisp up the bread to prevent the pizza sauce from soaking in. But there’s also another trick you can do… you can place larger sized pepperonis directly on the English muffins and then spoon the sauce over the pepperonis. This is a trick I use when making French Bread pizza, and it prevents any kind of sogginess!
Refrigerate: Store topping side up in an airtight container for 1 week. To reheat, place in oven at 375°F (190°C) for 10 minutes or until heated and warmed, or microwave on high for 1 minute until warmed and cheese is melted.
Freeze: Bake as directed. Remove from oven and let cool completely. Place the English muffins (topping side up) on a baking sheet and flash freeze for 1-2 hours or until fully frozen. Remove from the freezer and transfer to a freezer-safe container or bag. To reheat from frozen, preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
