Why These Oreo Brownies Are a Must-Try
This recipe isn’t just another brownie recipe; it’s a game-changer for anyone who loves the dynamic duo of chocolate and cream. Here’s why these Fudgy Oreo Brownies will quickly become your new go-to:
- Oreo Overload: The Perfect Cookie Infusion. What sets these brownies apart is the ingenious layering of Oreos. You get a fantastic, slightly softened layer of whole Oreo cookies baked right into the center of the brownie batter. This ensures that the Oreos retain their distinctive flavor and a delightful chewiness without becoming mushy. Plus, the generous scattering of chopped Oreos on top provides a satisfying crunch and visual appeal. Every single square is guaranteed to have that unmistakable Oreo presence, making them incredibly “Oreo packed” from top to bottom.
- Effortlessly Easy: Boxed Brownie Mix Magic. Don’t let the gourmet taste fool you – these are incredibly simple to make! The secret lies in utilizing high-quality boxed brownie mixes. We recommend brands like Ghirardelli (which you can often find in bulk at stores like Costco) for their rich flavor and consistent results. By doctoring up a mix with these iconic cookies, you save significant time and effort in the kitchen, making this recipe perfect for busy bakers, beginners, or anyone looking for a quick yet impressive dessert. It’s truly an easy Oreo brownie recipe that delivers maximum impact with minimal fuss.
- Achieve Unrivaled Fudginess: The Secret to Perfection. If you adore truly fudgy brownies, this recipe is for you. The key to achieving that perfectly gooey, melt-in-your-mouth texture is in the baking technique. We guide you to bake them just until the top is crackly and a toothpick inserted into the center still comes out with moist batter attached (typically around 45 minutes). This slight “underbaking” ensures that the brownies remain wonderfully moist and dense, rather than dry and cakey. Overbaking is the enemy of fudginess, so follow our precise instructions for the best fudgy Oreo brownies you’ve ever tasted!
Essential Ingredients for Your Oreo Brownies
Crafting these delectable Oreo brownies requires only a handful of ingredients, thanks to our smart use of a boxed brownie mix. Here’s a closer look at what you’ll need and why each component is important:

- Boxed Brownie Mix: The Foundation of Flavor. This recipe leverages the convenience and consistent quality of a good boxed brownie mix. You’ll need two boxes to fill a standard 9×13-inch baking pan and create substantial, thick brownies. We highly recommend Ghirardelli brand for its deep chocolate flavor and superior fudgy results. While we specify two 20 oz brownie mixes for optimal density, don’t worry if you can only find 18.3 oz or 18 oz boxes – the recipe is forgiving, and these sizes will still yield fantastic results. Remember, you’ll also need the additional ingredients listed on your chosen brownie box, which typically include eggs, water, and vegetable oil. These are crucial for forming the brownie batter.
- Oreos: The Star of the Show. You’ll need two forms of Oreos for this recipe to achieve the perfect balance of texture and intense cookie flavor. First, you’ll want whole Oreo cookies, which will form a delightful, softened layer in the middle of your brownies. These cookies will absorb some of the brownie moisture during baking, becoming wonderfully tender while still retaining their classic cream filling. Second, you’ll need some additional Oreos, roughly chopped, to sprinkle generously on top. These provide a contrasting crunch and visual appeal, signaling the delightful surprise within. Using genuine brand-name Oreos is highly recommended for the best flavor and texture profile.
How to Make Perfect Fudgy Oreo Brownies
Follow these straightforward steps to create your own batch of irresistible Fudgy Oreo Brownies. It’s easier than you think to achieve bakery-quality results right in your own kitchen!
- Prepare Your Workspace. Begin by preheating your oven to 325°F (160°C). This ensures your oven is at the correct temperature for even baking. Next, take a 9×13-inch baking pan and lightly spray it with nonstick cooking spray. For even easier removal and cleanup, consider lining the pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides to use as “handles” later. Set the prepared pan aside.
- Whip Up the Brownie Batter. In a large mixing bowl, combine the contents of both boxed brownie mixes. Carefully follow the instructions on your brownie mix boxes for adding the wet ingredients (typically eggs, water, and vegetable oil). Remember, you are doubling the recipe, so you will need to double the quantities of these wet ingredients as well. Stir the mixture until just combined. It’s crucial not to overmix the batter; stop as soon as there are no dry streaks remaining, even if a few small lumps persist. Overmixing can lead to tougher brownies.

- Lay Down the First Brownie Layer. Pour approximately half of the prepared brownie batter into your greased (or parchment-lined) 9×13-inch baking pan. Use an offset spatula or the back of a spoon to gently spread the batter into an even layer, ensuring it covers the entire bottom of the pan. This will be the base for your Oreo layer.
- Create the Oreo Cookie Layer. Take your whole Oreo cookies and arrange them in a single, even layer directly on top of the brownie batter. Place them side-by-side to cover the entire surface of the pan. Depending on the exact size of your Oreos and your pan, you’ll typically need about 20-24 cookies for this layer. Don’t worry if there are tiny gaps; the batter will fill them in during baking.
- Top with the Remaining Brownie Batter. Carefully pour the remaining brownie batter over the layer of Oreos. Use an offset spatula or the back of a spoon to gently spread the batter, ensuring that all the Oreos are completely covered and the top surface is relatively smooth. Take care not to disturb the Oreo layer too much during this step.

- Add the Chopped Oreo Topping. Generously sprinkle the roughly chopped Oreo pieces over the entire surface of the brownie batter. These will bake into the top layer, providing a wonderful textural contrast and an extra burst of Oreo flavor in every bite.
- Bake to Fudgy Perfection. Place the baking pan on the middle rack of your preheated oven. Bake for approximately 45 minutes. The key to truly fudgy brownies is to remove them from the oven when the top has a noticeable crinkly, shiny crust, but a toothpick inserted into the center still comes out with moist crumbs or a little wet batter attached. This indicates they are perfectly underbaked, which ensures ultimate fudginess.
- Cool and Serve. Once removed from the oven, resist the urge to cut into them immediately! Allow the Oreo brownies to cool completely in the pan for at least 1-2 hours, or even longer. As they cool, they will continue to set up and become wonderfully dense and fudgy. Once cooled, use a plastic knife (a great trick for clean cuts!) to slice them into squares. Enjoy your perfectly fudgy and irresistible Oreo brownies!

Expert Tips for the Best Oreo Brownies
Achieving brownie perfection is easier with a few insider tricks. Incorporate these tips to ensure your Fudgy Oreo Brownies are nothing short of spectacular:
- Opt for Quality Oreos. While generic sandwich cookies might be tempting, we highly recommend sticking with brand-name Oreos for this recipe. The distinctive flavor profile and texture of genuine Oreos truly shine through in these brownies, delivering the authentic taste you expect from an “Oreo brownie” recipe. The cream filling and chocolate cookie ratio are perfectly balanced for optimal enjoyment.
- The Plastic Knife Trick for Perfect Slices. For clean, professional-looking brownie squares, use a plastic knife to cut them. Plastic knives are naturally nonstick, which helps prevent the fudgy brownies from clinging to the blade and creating messy edges. Simply wipe the knife clean between cuts for the neatest results.
- Avoid Overmixing the Batter. This is a crucial step for fudgy brownies! Once you’ve added all the wet ingredients to the dry mix, stir the batter only until the dry streaks have just disappeared. A few small lumps are perfectly fine. Overmixing develops gluten in the flour, leading to a tougher, more cake-like brownie rather than the desired dense, fudgy texture. Think of it as mixing with a gentle hand.
- Consider Parchment Paper for Easy Removal. While nonstick spray works, lining your baking pan with parchment paper is an even better way to ensure easy removal and cleanup. For a smooth fit, crumple the parchment paper into a ball first, then uncrumple it and press it into the pan. This makes it more pliable and helps it lay flat against the sides and bottom, preventing creases that might impact the brownie shape.
- Unleash Your Creativity with Variations. The concept of layering cookies or candies within a brownie batter is truly mind-blowing, and the possibilities are endless! Beyond Oreos, imagine a layer of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups for a salty-sweet treat, Rolo candies for a gooey caramel surprise, or even graham crackers and marshmallow fluff for a s’mores-inspired brownie. This recipe is an excellent springboard for countless other decadent creations – so don’t hesitate to experiment with your favorite add-ins!
- Craving a Smaller Batch? If you’re baking for one or two and prefer a more modest portion, try adapting this idea to our Small Batch Brownies recipe. Simply prepare the small batch batter and top it with chopped Oreo pieces before baking for a delightful personal-sized treat.

Make Ahead, Storing, and Freezing
Planning ahead or managing leftovers is simple with these versatile brownies. Here’s how to ensure your Fudgy Oreo Brownies stay fresh and delicious:
- Make Ahead Considerations. Due to the unique layering of Oreos within the batter, we don’t recommend preparing the brownie batter significantly ahead of time and then baking it later. For the best results, mix the batter and bake it immediately after assembly. This prevents the Oreos from becoming too soggy before baking and ensures optimal texture.
- Storing Your Brownies. Once completely cooled, store your Oreo brownies in an airtight container or a large resealable plastic bag at room temperature. This will keep them fresh and wonderfully fudgy for up to 4 days. Avoid refrigeration, as it can dry out brownies and make them less fudgy.
- Freezing for Later Enjoyment. These brownies freeze beautifully! To freeze the entire pan, allow the brownies to cool completely, then wrap the pan tightly twice with plastic wrap, followed by a layer of aluminum foil. Store in the freezer for up to 1 month. To thaw, simply place the pan in the refrigerator overnight. For individual brownie squares, cut the cooled brownies into portions, wrap each square tightly in plastic wrap, and then place them in a freezer-safe bag. These can be stored in the freezer for up to 2 months. Thaw individual squares in the refrigerator or at room temperature for a quick treat.

Frequently Asked Questions About Oreo Brownies
Absolutely, these brownies freeze exceptionally well! You have a couple of options: you can freeze the entire pan after the brownies have cooled completely. Just make sure to wrap the pan tightly with two layers of plastic wrap to prevent freezer burn, and then it can be stored for up to 1 month. When you’re ready to enjoy them, simply transfer the pan to the refrigerator to thaw overnight. Alternatively, you can cut the cooled brownies into individual squares, wrap each one in plastic wrap, and then place them in a freezer-safe bag. This method allows for easy access to single servings and keeps them fresh for up to 2 months in the freezer.
It’s incredibly simple and quick! Start by preparing two boxes of your favorite brownie mix according to their package directions (remembering to double the ingredients for the two mixes). Once your batter is ready, pour half of it into a greased 9×13-inch baking pan, spreading it into an even layer. Next, arrange whole Oreo cookies over the batter, covering the entire surface. Pour the remaining brownie batter over the Oreos, smoothing it out so they are completely covered. Finally, sprinkle chopped Oreos on top for extra crunch and flavor. Bake at 325ºF (160°C) for about 45 minutes, and you’ll have perfect Oreo brownies!
The most common reason for hard, dry brownies is overbaking. For truly fudgy brownies, you want to pull them out of the oven just a tad early. Our recommended baking time is approximately 45 minutes, but oven temperatures can vary, so the “toothpick test” is your best guide. Insert a toothpick into the center of the pan; if it comes out with moist crumbs or a little wet batter clinging to it, your brownies are perfectly done for that ultra-fudgy texture. If the toothpick comes out completely clean, they are likely overbaked, resulting in a drier, cakey texture. It’s always better to err on the side of slightly underbaking for maximum fudginess!
Fudgy brownies are primarily a result of a higher fat-to-flour ratio, creating a dense, moist, and rich texture. In contrast, cakey brownies typically have more flour relative to fat and often include leavening agents like baking powder to give them a lighter, more airy crumb. However, ingredients aren’t the only factor. The baking time is equally crucial! Even with the perfect fudgy brownie ingredients, overbaking will dry them out and turn them cakey. That’s why removing brownies from the oven when they’re slightly underdone, as indicated by the moist toothpick test, is key to achieving that wonderfully gooey, fudgy center that everyone loves.

Equipment
-
13″x9″ glass baking pan
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 325°F. Spray a 9”x13” inch baking pan with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.
-
In a large bowl, stir together the boxed brownie mix and ingredients called for on the directions (remembering to double the quantities for two boxes).
-
Spoon half of the batter into the prepared baking pan. Spread into an even layer so that it covers the bottom of the pan.
-
Line the Oreos on top of the brownie batter. I used 24 Oreos, but you may only need 20. Pour the remaining brownie batter over the Oreos and smooth into an even layer. The batter should cover all of the Oreos.
-
Sprinkle the chopped Oreos over the top of the brownie batter.
-
Bake for 45 minutes. The top will be crackly, and a toothpick inserted in the center should come out with some brownie batter on it (this is how you’ll get extra fudgy brownies). Let the brownies cool for 1-2 hours before cutting into. As the brownies cool they will set and be super fudgy!
